Santa Hat

Sizes: 18" toddler, 19" child, 21" adult, 22" adult large
Gauge: 4 sts = 1” Keyplate 3, Bulky 6.
Materials: Worsted Weight Yarn:60(70, ,80,95) yds white and 100(125,140, 150) yds red. (We used plymouth "stars" for the white yarn and "Amore" red yarn.

 

  1. With white, Ewrap cast on 70(74,80,84)sts, leaving a 12" tail for sewing.  Row counter at zeros.
  2. Knit 16(20,26,26) rows.
  3. Cut white and change to red.  RC at zeros.
  4. Knit to RC 12(16,20,20).
  5. Knit 2 rows, decreasing 1 st on each end on first row.
  6. Repeat step 5 until 8(12,14,14)sts remain.
  7. Cut yarn, leaving a tail and thread tail threw live stitches with needle or crochet hook.  Remove from machine and pull sts tight.
  8. Sew seam.
  9. Make a pompom with the white yarn and sew on end of hat.
    To make pompom:

    Cut 2, 3 inch circles from cardboard. (Use a can as a template).
    Cut a 1 inch wide circle in the middle of each cardboard.
    Put both circles together and wind white yarn around the cardboard going through the middle until the cardboard center is filled up.
    Cut a 10 inch piece of white yarn.
    Hold the center of the covered cardboard between a thumb and finger.
    With scissors, cut the white yarn between the cardboard circles.
    Wind the 10 inch piece of yarn, between the cardboard circles and pull tight.
    Pull out the cardboard and fluff the pompom, trimming as necessary.
