Square poncho

Size: Child size or a shoulder poncho for an adult.
Materials: 550 yards worsted weight yarn.
Gauge: 4 sts and 5.5 rows = 1".
Keyplate 3dot or Bulky 5.
Make 2

  1. Ewrap cast on 99 sts. RC at zeros.  Knit 2 rows.
  2. Transfer every other stitch onto adjacent stitch.  Empty needles in WP.  Knit row.  Make sure each empty needles picked  up a loop.
  3. Knit to RC 58.  At the same time, every 3 rows,  transfer 2nd stitch on each end to end stitch. Leave empty needle in WP. (Makes eyelet).

 

  1. Back stitch bind off center 16 sts.  Place empty needles in NWP.
  2. Knit each shoulder separately. Whichever side the carriage is on will be knit first.
  3. Push opposite shoulder needles all the way forward to keep them from knitting.  Knit 1 row.
  4. Decrease 1 st at neck edge, every other row 4 times.
  5. Knit to row counter 70.  Break yarn and knit a few rows with waste yarn.
  6. Open all latches of opposite shoulder; push back needles just until the stitches barely touch the open latches.
  7. Place carriage on side of shoulder to be knit; thread with main color yarn.  Set row counter to 58.
  8. Repeat steps 6 through 8.
  9. Remove knitting from machine.  Remove hem or combs.

Knit 1 shoulder seam together by either doing kitchener stitch or by knitting together.

Bring forward 75 needles centered on machine.  Wrong side facing, hang neck edge on needles.  With main yarn, knit 11 rows.

Back stitch bind off.

Knit remaining shoulder seam together.

Sew roll neck edge, weave in  ends. Block or press poncho.
